On the occasion of the setting up of the Diocesan nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square, we met with architect Angelo Santitoro, designer of the nativity scene that will represent Agro Nocerino-Sarnese in Rome this Jubilee Christmas. In his words there is gratitude, commitment and above all a clear vision: to enclose in a symbolic space our land, its architecture, its flavors and its saints next door. The heart of the work? Christ, the center of Christian life and the destination of “pilgrims of hope.” Among the most significant details are the Shepherd of Hope, a fisherman pointing to the Holy Door, and references to the servants of God Alfonso Russo and Don Enrico Smaldone, to our saints: Blessed Tommaso Maria Fusco and St. Alfonso Maria Fusco. A path that finds its fulcrum in St. Alphonsus Maria de’ Liguori, the inspiration of the title chosen by the Bishop: “You come down from the stars.” Santitoro tells it simply: “I hope that those who will look at this crib will be able to marvel like a child gazing at the stars.”
